| Me Emmanuel J B Danquah a.k.a. Sony Achiba was born on October 2, in the late 1970’s years ago to Mr. J B Danquah and Akua Fremaa of blessed memory at Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana in West Africa. He had his education at the Dichemso Primary through Osei Tutu Secondary and completed at the Kumasi Technical School. Sony started dancing at a very tender age to the admiration of all who caught a glimpse of him while he was in the primary school. In several local dancing competitions organized by friends and sometimes relatives, he won and this spurred him to greater heights. In those days, his elder siblings encouraged him a great deal to keep dancing. He however started dancing publicly at a party organized by her elder sisters husband for her on her birthday. His own renditions of Michael Jackson’s dances were so unique that everyone it earned him a standing ovation after he danced. The name SONY ACHIBA means a lot to him. According to Sony, he chose the name because he likes anything SONY. ACHIBA he revealed is an acronym which stands for ACHIBA is an acronym for Action, Compassion, Humble or Honest, Irresistible, Blessed and Achiever because he was born an achiever. Sony indeed has all those qualities in him. At a very tender age, Sony started football with the GIHOC Babies Colts Club in Kumasi. At a later stage, he played with the Industrial United Football Club, a second division club till a fatal accident occurred changing his destiny. After that fatal accident in the early 1990’s, his brother-in-law who saw his dance-power started registering him for competitions. His efforts paid off twice when Sony won the great embassy double-do dance regional events. Alongside dancing, another passion Sony has is music. He went into music because that is what he wanted to do, that is what he had the passion for. At the place where he grew up in Kumasi, there was a Concert Hall in front of the house where artistes like Pat Thomas were playing almost fortnightly. Dance and music being the passion for his existence, he sometimes goes round with the older musicians and dance for them. Sony successfully introduced a new kind of hip-hop into Africa by name “HIP-DIA”, that is hip-life mixed in the Indian vein. In the year 2000, Sony released his debut album “ODO PAPA BI” which did not do so well due to his inability to promote it well. True talent not only stands the test of time, it stands out in its own time, rising above the competition to connect with an audience and establish its own indelible, original voice. With that in mind, Sony came out with his number two album in the year 2001 with the title “INDIAN OCEAN 1” with hit songs like “ONIPA BONIAYEFO” which was nominated in three categories of the Ghana Music Awards in the year 2002 and “DAAMERE WOYARE” another hit song. Two years later, in 2003, Sony came out with the “INDIAN OCEAN 2” which also featured hit songs like “MAMA AFRIKA”, “SURO NIPA”, “WHO DO YOU TRUST” and “SONY MABA.” Sony is in the studio right now working on his fourth album, “INDIAN OCEAN 3: MEMORIES” which has a duet with a well-known musician, Peenaz Masani from India. Now, in addition to promoting and performing behind his own songs, Sony is expanding into song writing and production for other artists. He sees these pursuits as essential to his longevity in a fickle and fast-changing music industry. As Sony wisely says: "I have seen too many artists come one day and go the next day." "Since I want to be in this a long period," "I am making sure that my business and creativity is properly taken care of. I'd hate to look back years from now and know I threw it all away because I didn’t handle the right way." SONY ACHIBA, a Ghana-India oriented musician, a member of the Musicians Union of Ghana is a writer, composer, an arranger, and a singer and is aspiring to become a very good sound engineer to assist upcoming musicians. Sony’s hobbies include making friends, playing football and making new friends. |
